2022- 2023 “Marathon to Comcast”- Maryland Public Girls Basketball - PREVIEW 3A REGION
And we are off… the “2022-2023 Race to Comcast begins”. As a former coach, athletic director, and school leader I have always valued how Girls’ basketball still embodied the team concept. In the age of position less basketball, it is refreshing to see good post players who can dominate the paint and good perimeter players who can control the game. In collaboration with Prep Girls Hoops, and SportsMajors_com (IG), I am going to preview the MPSSA 2022-2023 Girls Basketball Regions. These are merely predictions, as we know anything could happen. There are always sleeper teams. Let us look at the 3A Region Below.
#1- Defending 3A- State Champ Poly Engineers- Head Coach- Kendall Peace-Able- Balt. City
Taylor Addison and Da’Brya Clark are arguably the best backcourt in the state. Calm, cool and a natural leader is how to best describe Da’Brya Clark. It is like having a second coach on the floor. Coach Peace has always hung her hat on defense, last year they ran through the 3A state tourney winning every game by double digits. It is almost criminal for this team not to be ranked #2 overall in the area behind McDonough, but the #1 public school for sure. The only test they will get in the city league is a physical Forest Park team with Western in a rebuilding year. I look forward to seeing Trinity Massenburg and Mickelle Lowry pick back up as key pieces to this powerhouse. The eye test shows that Poly is the team to beat. I know that Howard High is poised to make a strong run, but the physicality of this team even matches up well with the private schools in the area. Look for Poly to run the table in the BCPSS league and you can pen them in at Comcast come March. Perhaps a rematch with Howard.
Players to Watch: Trinity Massenburg, Da’Brya Clark, Mickelle Lowry, Taylor Addison.
#2 Howard High - 3A State Finalist – Head Coach -Scott Robinson- Howard County
All in. This is the last ride for the core group of players. After their 44-game winning was snapped last year in the championship game, Howard is ready to get back to comcast. Led by Gabby Kennerly and Samiyah Nasir, they are sure to be front runners in the Howard County League. Megan Yarnevich’s sophomore season should be filled with lofty expectations as this is a championship or bust year. They have the talent and the coaching to make it back to comcast. This is such a fun team to watch, they share the ball to perfection and Nasir the best perimeter defender in the state. A spunky River Hill team may challenge them in their league.
Players to watch: Riley Watson, Meghan Yarnevich, Gabby Kennerly, Samiyah Nasir.
#3 River Hill -Head Coach- Teresa Waters- Howard County Schools
Ready to challenge Goliath. This maybe the year that another team takes the mantle away from Howard High. Led by Junior Taylor Shane, Junior Mannat Gill, and freshman Camille Nesmith this team I would not be surprised if they make it to a regional final. This is a fun group of players to watch.
Players to Watch: Dylan Watson, Camille Nesmith, Dylan Watson, Mannat Gill
#4 Manchester Valley- Head Coach Heather Dewees- Carroll County
The Mavericks should compete with Century and FSK in the CCPS league. They had a good showing in the fall league vs top tier talent. Coach Dewees will always get the most out of her players.
Players to Watch: Reese Kresslein, Carmaya Bowman, Emma Penczek
