2022- 2023 “Marathon to Comcast”- Maryland Public School Girls Basketball - PREVIEW 4A REGION
And we are off… the “2022-2023 Marathon to Comcast begins”. As a former coach, athletic director, and school leader I have always valued how Girls’ basketball still embodied the team concept. In the age of position less basketball, it is refreshing to see good post players who can dominate the paint and good perimeter players who can control the game. In collaboration with Prep Girls Hoops, and Sportsmajors_com (Instagram). I am going to preview the MPSSA 2022-2023 Girls Basketball Regions. These are merely predictions, as we know anything could happen. There are always sleeper teams. Let us look at the 4A Region Below.
#1- Old Mill- Head Coach- Henry Fuller- Anne Arundel County
This was the only region whereas I did not rank the previous state champion number 1. The simple fact is that from the “Eye test” Old Mill is the team to beat. Anyone with a healthy knowledge of the local girls’ basketball scene would expect this region to come down to Glen Burnie or Old Mill. The unfortunate thing is they are both in the 4A east region, which leaves the door open to another up-and-coming team. Expect for Old Mill to run the table in the AA County league. I think losing to a team four times in 1 year is enough to say, “Never again”. This team will be on a mission. You heard it first hear. You can Pen them in as a state finalist for 4A.
Players to Watch: Amani Watts, Amaya Douglass, Jemirah Brown, Neveah Brown
#2 Glen Burnie- Head Coach -Sam Porter Anne Arundel County
What the hardest thing to do in sports? Beat a rival over and over for the second consecutive year. Coach Porter and Amourie Porter will be looking to do that again. The matchups with Old Mill will be “Must see basketball.” Unfortunately, last year Glen Burnie ran into a talented Western team who dominated everyone in the tourney. This year the road to comcast for the championship may just come out of Anne Arundel County.
Players to watch: Amaya Douglass, Amourie Porter
#3 Seneca Valley- Coach Ali Hashemzadeh- Montgomery County
So let me just say this. This team was my favorite team to watch during the fall league season hands down. Potential, talented, hardworking is the best way to describe this group. They played some top teams during the fall league and never backed down. Teagan Phillips the super sophomore, known for her defensive prowess is back. Mina Hashemzadeh is also back with her ability to handle the rock and shoot it from long range. Brielle Watson is returning from a torn ACL but should be a major contributor in the post. Danika Barnes will be the rim protector with Watson. One of my favorite players to watch was Nia Hall, she can handle the rock and get her own shot at any time. She is a matchup nightmare. This is my sleeper-surprise team in the 4A. You heard it first from me just in case they sneak up on any of the favorites in this region.
Players to Watch: Mina Hashemzadeh, Danika Barnes, Nia Hall, Teagan Phillips, Brielle Watson
#4 Western High School – 4A State Champs- Head Coach Latasha Townsend Baltimore City
The loss of the doves top two players to graduation leaves Coach Townsend with a major task this year. Getting back to the big game will take a group effort. But hey, Coach did it last year with just seven players. Breasia Coit is back with a host of other role players who contributed to the championship team. I am sure the trademark defense will keep them afloat throughout the season. Games vs Forest Park & Poly will test their barometer. As always anything is possible once the ball is jumped at center court. Do not count out the champions.
Players to Watch: Maya Gray, Breasia Coit, Kay Kay, Carrington S
