2022- 2023 “Race to Comcast”- Maryland Public School Girls Basketball - PREVIEW 2A REGION
And we are off… the “2022-2023 Race to Comcast begins”. As a former coach, athletic director, and school leader I have always valued how Girls’ basketball still embodied the team concept. In the age of position less basketball, it is refreshing to see good post players who can dominate the paint and good perimeter players who can control the game. In collaboration with Prep Girls Hoops, I am going to preview the MPSSA 2022-2023 Girls Basketball Regions. These are merely predictions, as we know anything could happen. There are always sleeper teams. Let us look at the 2A Region Below.
#1- Defending 2A- State Champions- Fallston - Head Coach- Johnny Woods Harford County

There is an old saying that to become the champions you must beat the champions. After losing a boat load of seniors Coach Woods is poised to defend his 2A state crown. Rebuilding is hard but good coaching and defense always will keep you in the game. With two key post players coming back the champions should be right in the thick of things once February/March hits.
Players to Watch: 4 Team Captains. Renae Gant Post player (also plays volleyball), Lindsey Dettloff, Aya Galloway, Natalie Wirth.
#2 Harford Tech - Head Coach- Brad Hunt- Harford County

The cobras are finally set to take the mantle as the top team in Harford County this year. This was one of my favorite teams to watch during the fall league. They are led by one of the best players in the area Anyia Gibson. Don’t be surprised if you see the cobras cutting down the nets in Comcast this upcoming spring.
Players to watch: Jessica Castro, Amaya Goodsell, Anyia Gibson
#3 Hereford Bulls- 2A State Finalist - Head Coach- Dave Schreiner- Baltimore County Schools

Only one point and two overtimes separated the 21-22 BCPS champion from being 2A state champions. After the graduation of several seniors Coach Dave has some key contributors returning. Sharp shooting Junior Lauren Kraft is the leader of this solid team. With his trademark 1-3-1 defense and balanced attack, don’t be surprised if they make another championship run this year. They should finish second in BCPS this year behind Pikesville High School.
Players to Watch: Gabby Nieberlein, Lauren Orner, Lauren Kraft
#4 Gwynn Park High School - Head Coach- Michael Strother- PG County

Honestly, this team maybe the dark horse. With 4-5 players hitting the six feet mark in height led by Junior Nala Abraham, they will be a tough out in the 2A playoffs. Controlling the glass and pounding teams inside will certainly be the formula this year. They have a tough schedule, which means they will be battle tested.
Players to Watch: Geormaya Davis, Nala Abraham, Jasmine Harper, Trinity Neal
